Duplicating content in Ondexx

Background

When creating new content levels in Ondexx, the option is available to duplicate an existing Module, Chapter, or Page, rather than start entirely from scratch. This allows existing content levels to be used as a template.

For higher levels in the Ondexx structure, everything inside the original will also be duplicated. For example, if a Module is copied, the Chapters and Pages inside of the original will be also be duplicated.

Additionally, content levels can be duplicated across different Sites, so long as a user has the appropriate rights in both the source and destination Sites.

Duplicating pages

When a Page is duplicated, an unpublished draft of the page will be created with the content and settings of the original.

If a page is duplicated to a different Site, elements of the page will also be copied to the destination site. This includes:

  • Components
  • Popovers
  • Labels
  • Files and Document Viewers
  • E-Learning Courses
  • Page Attachments

Note

Custom CSS classes in the content of the page will not be duplicated. As such, there may be minor differences between the original and duplicate page if these are heavily used.

To duplicate a Page…

  1. Click Add New > Page
  2. Select the Site, Module, and Chapter of the new page.
  3. Enter the Page Title and optionally Description of the new page.
  4. Under Action, select Duplicate Existing Page
  5. Select the Page you would like to duplicate.
  6. Click Create.

Duplicating modules and chapters

When duplicating Modules and Chapters, all content levels contained therein will also be duplicated. Pages that are duplicated in this manner will be in the same Page Lifecycle step as the original, i.e. published originals will be published when duplicated, etc.

When a Module or Chapter is duplicated to a different Site, elements of any contained pages will also be copied to the destination site. This includes:

  • Module Settings
  • Chapter Settings and Default Page Components
  • Components in Pages
  • Popovers in Page content
  • Labels in Pages
  • Files and Document Viewers in Pages
  • E-Learning Courses in Pages
  • Page Attachments

Note

Custom CSS classes in the content of the page will not be duplicated. As such, there may be minor differences between the original and duplicate page if these are heavily used.

To duplicate a Module, Chapter, or Page…

  1. Click Add New > Module/Chapter
  2. Select the location of the new Module/Chapter.
  3. Enter the Name of the new Module/Chapter.
  4. Select your desired settings for the new Module/Chapter.
  5. Under Action, select Duplicate Existing Module/Chapter
  6. Select the Module/Chapter you would like to duplicate.
  7. Click Save Settings/Save.

Duplicating sites

When creating a new site, the option is available to duplicate an entire existing site.

Duplicating a site will produce a complete copy of the original’s content, templates, settings, and files. This includes…

  • The Site Structure (modules, chapters, pages, and page components)
  • Contents and structure of the original’s File Manager
  • E-Learning Courses
  • Components
  • Content Templates
  • Component Templates
  • Popovers and Labels
  • Custom Stylesheets and classes
  • Roles and Groups, including rights assigned to them.
  • Site Settings, including any custom scripts

Certain aspects of the original site will not be copied, such as…

  • Users onboarded to the original site—i.e. users will need to be onboarded manually
  • Page Viewing Permissions and Component Viewing Permissions
  • Removed Pages and Deleted Drafts
  • Previous versions of pages—i.e. only the currently published version of the page will be copied.

Minor changes will be made to the copied content of the site. These changes are primarily automatic updates to the file and popover URLs, so that they will correctly reference the copied file or popover, rather than the original. This action will be performed in…

  • Home Page content & Custom Callout
  • Module listing content
  • Chapter listing content
  • Page Component content
  • Content Templates and Component Templates
  • Popovers

Aside from these minor updates, all content will be left untouched. This includes any hyperlinks in the content, even if the destination is a page that was copied.

Sites can be duplicated by users with the “Can Create Sites” instance-wide right. This follows the same process as creating a new site.

  1. In a site, click + Add New > Site. Alternatively, one can use Sites > All Available Sites > + Add Site.
  2. Enter the desired name of the new site. This can be changed later.
  3. Select Duplicate Existing Site.
  4. Choose the site you would like to duplicate from the dropdown.
  5. Click Save to duplicate the selected site.
